The September 9th Apple event in San Francisco is usually about iPods. And Steve Jobs has announced that all the thick iPods will be discontinued. YES. SCRAPPED.

Instead, you’ll get Classics with 120GB at US$249. So they’re all thin Classics with an upgraded size.

But that’s nothing. Jobs is now introducing the thinnest ever Apple iPod Nano!

Wait… how thin? Thinner than Macbook Air thin.

So what’s so interesting about this iPod Nano other than its super thinness?

Well, they’ve put all the bright things in iPhone, and squeezed it all in Nano.

Yes, tilt the iPod and it automatically goes into landscape mode.

What else is neat about this iPod?

SHAKE it. Yes, physically shake it, and it automatically shuffles your playlist.

Apart from that, Apple has tried very hard to make it the most environmentally-friendly iPod ever. I think its huge considering a lot of Apple users are people who are environmentalists.

The Nano will also be available in every colour on the spectrum. Including PINK!

Steve is now moving into the iPod touch.

The iPod touch is still the same, but it’s getting a boost internally.

Integrated volume controls on the side.

Built in speakers (very hard to do for something this thin)

Genius playlist creation

App store app built in

Nike+ built in

Enhance UI

Better artwork for albums

Steve talks a bit more about the Genius playlist and now he’s talking about the App store.

He’s now introducing the things people love about these handheld devices: GAMES

The stage is now handed over to Phil Schiller.

He’s introducing a game that just shipped for the iPod Touch: Spore Origins.

He’s playing the game using iPod Touch’s accelarometer, and tilting the iPod to manouvre the character.

Now off to the world’s greatest game: FOOTBALL!!!!

Finally a soccer game for the iPod Touch! (and I assume iPhone as well?)

This game is called Real Soccer 2009 and it has a virtual d-pad that comes on screen.

And Need for Speed!!!

Again, using the accelerometer for control of the vehicle. Pretty cool!

Steve Jobs is back, and he’s proclaiming, it’s the best device to play games! Watch out Nintendo! (and Sony?)

Jobs is now introducing iPhone 2.1 software updates. It’s a big update. They fixed lots of bugs.

Fewer dropped calls

Big battery life improvements

No crashes with Apps

Backing up is faster

And it’s FREE to all owners beginning this Friday.

–END LIVE BLOGGING–

It’s very easy to use. And you can apply it to your entire domain. Just get the API key and you’re ready to go.

Just go to http://www.typecanvas.com/widgets/prayertime-sg/ for the widget and instructions.

Apparently, I realised I’m the first CMA in Singapore! The Certified MySQL Associate is an entry level certification for MySQL professionals. It’s particularly useful for programmers and developers that work primarily with the XAMP Stack (X Operating System, Apache, MySQL, PHP).

Now that I’m a CMA, this will help me stand out from the crowd. I scored a 90% and got only 5 questions wrong. I scored 100% for 3 component chapters, 85% on 2 of them and 75% on one of them. But I won’t stop here. I’m retaking the CMDEV (Certified MySQL Developer) next year which consists of 2 very long exams. I missed the pass grade by 7 points on Paper 1 and 2 points on Paper 2 a year and a half back. Pass grades are very high. In the case of Certification Exams, a pass grade would mean I have to at least get 75% of the questions right. So noting how close I got to passing the more difficult certifications, I am now going to prepare myself better by spacing out the 2 papers, so I can study the material more thoroughly.

I intend to take the Zend Certified Engineer which certifies me as a competent PHP developer. But the only barrier is the high costs that come with it. I’d have to spend at least $1,380 just for the exam and study material. The A-Dev pack which will get me a 90-day track would set me back $3,795. It’s unfortunate that the government doesn’t seem to consider this a critical certification. My MySQL certification costs are borne out of my own pocket as I can’t use the CITREP grant for this.

I feel that the government should be fair to people who are subscribers of the Open Source movement instead of over-emphasising the Microsoft certifications.

And I made a whole recording where I was the drummer, bassist, and lead singer. The lead acoustic guitar i ripped off YouTube to sing along to. hahaha!

I sang, “The First Cut Is The Deepest”, originally written and sang by Yusuf Islam (then known as Cat Stevens), but I sang the Sheryl Crow version. I butchered the song as a guy. So I redid everything and turned on Voice Transformation and set the Male to Female voice, and voila! My alter ego Nadra!.

Wow! It’s been a whole month sabbatical since I blogged, and what a way to start it off again.

I’m LIVE at Microsoft@NTUC right now attending the July 2008 PHP Singapore meetup. Today is the launch of the PHP Society. Michael Chng, the convener of the PHP group society has decided to evolve it into a more ubiquitous organisation called the Ph.P Society (Philosophy of Programming Society). So really, this group will touch on any language, not just PHP. However, it has been made clear that PHP will be a focus in this society, probably for historical purposes.

Among the objectives of the Ph.P Society is to provide training and certification to PHP developers in a local market which is hungry for PHP developers. Unfortunately, Singapore’s tertiary education system doesn’t cover the language in its syllabus. However, a lot of companies locally require such a skillset but it is difficult to ascertain how credible a PHP developer is and programmers that have an affinity with the language are often left doing other stuff in their fulltime jobs.

Ph.P Society is working very closely with Zend, the core developers of the PHP platform and beginning in August 2008, the society will organise workshops and seminars to certify developers in the PHP language.

The society is also organising workshops outside the PHP language scope like an Oracale and an IBM System i5 Workshop.

Moving forward, the Ph.P Society cannot continue without funds. The society will charge for membership.

Below are the charges for an annual membership

But this is too cool not to share.

However, as a Macniac, I must add that Apple produced the first commercial multi-touch display first with the iPhone, and while Microsoft is going to release this for consumers in late 2008, I think Apple might surprise us in 2009 with their own multi-touch table top computers.
